You say his speeches stink, but that's selective- he's actually been quite eloquent and compelling in many major speeches. Put Harper in a townhall, oh nevermind... My point, Ignatieff has shown an ease in "edgy" venues in Quebec, so don't make any assumptions. This guy ain't a dud. Seem to recall, beside his intellectual prowess, he was pretty popular on television, articulating. Just don't get carried away with the pessimism.
