I see Vic "lock up your daughters" Toews is still batting a thousand.
Still trying to figure out how the Reformatories can view the long gun registry as such an fundamental attack on their civil liberties, yet argue that warrantless wiretapping is just swell. The hypocrisy is mind-boggling.
I think the following one of the more interesting sections of the bill. Cynically, I could see the RCMP "finding a law to watch you with" an easy, enjoyable task. And with no oversight provisions in the bill, there is no opportunity to see that the RCMP (or others) interpret this part of the law fairly or consistently.
follows: (2) A designated person must ensure that he or she makes a request under subsection (1) only in performing, as the case may be, a duty or function
(a) of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service under the Canadian Security Intelligence Service Act;
(b) of a police service, including any related to the enforcement of any laws of Canada, of a province or of a foreign jurisdiction; or
(c) of the Commissioner of Competition under the Competition Act.
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Apparently nobody. With a government as demonstrably secretive, authoritarian and manipulative as this and a prime minister who has turned the public service into an agency of the PMO, only a fool would believe they wouldn't abuse this power for their own advancement. Harper already has a prison fetish. Toews apparently has a thing for babysitters. Should we allow two miscreants like this to turn Canada into a police state?
