A couple of pictures from the Guelph No Prorogue rally yesterday. A fantastic turnout of around 500, which looks to be one of the bigger ones, per capita:
Ah.. but this event was HIJACKED, HIJACKED I tell you, by the NDP and Liberals. (And there were only 120 of you there, though quite frankly I can see more then 120 in that photo).
Ergo, this event doesnt count.. nor the others.. (nor the 15 point drop for the Cons in 15 days, I guess).
So THERE!
(Just putting out the Con talking points I've sen elsewhere - that way no need to repeat themselves).
What's really important, looks like about 3 TIMES the people showed up for these rallies, as opposed to the anti-coalition protests, which were considered meaningful and indicative of wider unrest at the time. Even sceptics are acknowledging, it was a great day, by an objective measure.
I'm also really happy that Ignatieff endorsed legistlative restraint.
It takes a LOT for Canadians For going Out and protest on Streets.. I am very pleased and impressed to see the rallies went very well ... whoever is trying to dismiss it is just dumb and blinded.
Ian Capstick now estimates 27,000 nationwide -- http://www.mediastyle.ca/2010/01/estimated-25000-canadians-rally-for-democracy/ Yes, I agree this was a stunning turnout. Even a fairly "non-political" person I know in Quelph was planning to attend the Quelph rally -- I thought the Ontario numbers were higher because Ontario was so hard hit by job losses in the recession. So the idea of just unilaterally declaring yourself entitled to be "off work" for six weeks did not go over very well in Ontario!
Populations in Ontario and area are lot larger than most other cites other than Vancouver and maybe Montreal so it was to be expected that those numbers would be much higher. Hi Scott you are correct with all the Reform/Con talking points on the net by Con parrot bloggers. Maybe they are employed by the PMO to sit on their PCs pasting the lines of the talking points they are directed to say. I wonder if their PCs were supplied by the cons as well. That's the only reason I can figure out why they remain so blind too the Reform/Cons boners and their leadership. Nothing else makes any sense how they could be so blind to all the facts.
I notice at Macleans, two separate people putting the number at no more than 200, one even "curiously" questioning the angle. Holy smokes, either wayward Cons or math failures. Those pics DON'T include everyone. There were people behind me, and spilled off both sides of the photo. Anyways, I'm not trying to inflate, that crap is pointless.
No. I think they are waiting for an "official" tally. It seems to be an subjective exercise, all around, anyways. All I know, the square was packed, diverse and engaged. A fantastic turnout, apparently all across the country. Deal with it conbots.
Just one final comment on the "controversy". Look at the two pics. Note the position of the big light standard in both, and the pink and green flag (use those because they are the end spot for each photo. If you combine the panaroma of those two, see how far the crowd continued past the light standard, past the pink and green flag, you start to see how big the rally was. Plus, neither one captures the END of the crowd. And, the crowd is about three buses deep. Hello! Just sayin ;)
From your pics Steve, the Guelph rally was on par with the size of the Waterloo rally, which the Record has pegged at 500. That is quite the accomplishment taking into consideration the population difference (Guelph-100,000 vs. K-W combined-330,000).
The Record is at least more honest than the Mercury, though I still say it was closer to 600 @ Waterloo. In his national tally, Ian Capstick posts that rally at 750, which is definitely over from what I saw. However it was definitely much larger than the 300 that the local Harperbots are posting. They are obviously suffering from protest-envy, what else can be said?

Couldn't capture everyone, no wide angle. My estimate is fair, no spiking required.
As for detractors, look at the laughable source and YAWN. Whatever baby boy.

Their age is also suspect.
500 is what the local organizers say were there, with 300 moving into the church for the discussion, which was in itself an inspiring event.

Did you get on and rebut that?

The Guelph local paper finally weighs in with this:
"The roughly 300 people — and many more — began their day with a peaceful rally in St. George’s Square"
WTF does that mean? 300, AND MANY MORE. So, like 4 or 500 then? Too funny.
The 300 was for the q and a, the reporter told me more than 400 (but it's subjective) at the rally :)
Bite me conbots.

The energy expended, attempting to undercut the numbers, speaks to fear in my mind. The more noise, the more they realize the problem.
