Critical Mass

I can't take it anymore. I know there are important matters at the heart of this story, but for the love of GAWD, this shit coming out of respected organizations like the Canadian Press is blowing my MIND:
Guergis had a history in the clubs with hometown playboy: acquaintance

Thank-you TMZ, a big shout out to my peeps at National Enquirer, what nonsense! Sorry for the animated response, but WTF cares if a young Helena Guergis frequented clubs and had a colorful boyfriend. Maybe more of an oddity, if a young person didn't go out to bars and let loose.

This isn't a story, it's character assassination, and it's really disappointing to boot. I can't stand Helena Guergis, a lightweight if there ever was one, but how have you managed to actually make me FEEL SORRY for her? Piling on was so yesterday, now we're reduced to digesting ancient history revolving around nothingness. Newsflash, if you were in any club in the 90's, there was probably somebody doing blow in a can!!! If anyone is shocked by these facts, it's more a statement on a sheltered life, than a revelation.

I look forward to tomorrow's story, detailing the events that lead to Guergis losing her virginity in a Barrie park.

Ahhh, I feel better now.

Geez, she's 41 and just recently got married. Why would anything think it's news because she's dated over the years? This is getting pitiful.

"This is getting pitiful"

It really, really is... We don't do politics like this in Canada.

The media seem to be up in her area then, interviewing people - when more important things are going on?

If it comes out that she's totally innocent, then all her personal stuff is out there. I can't stand it anymore.

Double-standard it seems. Rahim a bit of a playboy makes him a ladies man, admired, but Helena dating is wrong?

And people wonder why more women do not enter politics in Canada.

If I had a job where I had to explain everything I did in a bar in my youth - well I would not have a job.

OK Gayle - I'll bite - what DID you do as a youth in the bars? ;-)

Really good "At Issue" tonight. Where this story should be, inside the lines.

If I told you I could never run for office. :D

All of this because Canadians have no party to care about, to vote for.
There is no point anymore being a supporter for any party, because they've all done worse that we're not even aware of.

Pathetic is right. That we've sunk so low speaks to how politics can no longer hide behind democracy, it only exists as a pacifier for the voting public. Democracy is dead and it's time we all acknowledge that. If we don't, then we have nothing. I can't believe politically astute peeps even bother with this shit. It's way past half-time that the people need to rise up, if not, well continue on.

It's just another distraction from the real issue -- lack of authenticity/ethics/leadership from the CON so-called helmsman. We're use to seeing these side issues played up by the sinking in their own refuse NaPo and Sun chain; not that the Star, CBC and CP aren't above chasing ambulances on occasion.
You're bang-on about At Issue. Seems the ottawa-toronto-montreal pundits get it. Rex Murphy, unfortunately, continues to remain in fart-catching denial when it comes to Harper.

Actually, Steve, I think many of us are starting to feel sorry for Guergis...I mean, when you look at what the media has been coming out with lately about her...

She should never have been put in cabinet, but I don't she deserves this. She has an even worse boss.

I mean, EX-Lax Max was never kicked out of caucus for leaving those papers at his ex-girlfriend's home. In fact, if we recall, Harpercons had the media blaming Julie Couillard for the most part...

Something to think about

But I'm glad the Liberals didn't cave into buying anything from the sleazy bankrupt PI

The wider issue now, how exactly does this story help to attract more women to run for public office?

Not just kind of, I DO feel sorry for Guergis now. Regardless of being a lightweight that should have never been in cabinet (more a reflection of Harper and the shallow talent pool of the CPofC), no one deserves to have their past paraded on the news like this.

One more example of why the media needs to die, then what rubble remains can be used to rebuild the fourth estate.

As to the "wider issue " ....

No, I do not believe this would discourage a Carolyn Bennet, Olivia Chow or Nellie McLung. Air heads of both genders might think twice, mind.

(sorry if I misspelled some names above)

the wider issue is that Harper has deflected, yet again, the attention from his on-going vandal-ization of our civil society while he turfed an embarrassment from his cabinet.

The exposure of this two-bit bankrupt PI and his tabloid story will somehow get spun to make Harper (even Helena) as victims and Harper as erring on the side of caution.

Now that we see "tomorrow's story" is about Helena Guergis writing a letter touting a green technology company to Simcoe County officials while hubby Jaffer and businessman Gillani were involved in a plan to take the firm public in a $1 billion deal, should we keep with the ignoring program? This isn't about character assassination or whether certain members of the public feel sorry for her or not, this debacle appears to be about graft and sleaze and personally, I WANT her piled upon.

The fact you're quoting a news story, proves the Libs don't really need to do anything. Just stick to the wider narratives, and pounce is something truly CREDIBLE fleshes out.

Omar said...

Well, I don't think it proves anything, but I take your point. Time will tell if the relaxed and groovy strategy pays dividends. When it comes to the hardball Harpercons, I'm not so sure it doesn't play into their hands.

Steve V said...

Actually, the steady BARRAGE of news stories, without Liberal input, proves this thing lives on its own. I'm not saying we don't ask questions, again not an either/or, but we sure as shit don't need to drive this story, it's a runaway train irregardless.

Actually, on balance, I think the OLO is handling this issue perfectly, classy and focusing on the relevant points.

Tof KW said...

Omar, for the record I only feel sorry for Guergis in the issue of the MSM reporting very personal and irrelevant, sensationalized bullshit. If they dig up actual tidbits about lobbying irregularities, influence peddling, and conflicts of interest; those are most definitely valid questions which the media (and opposition parties) should be asking.

Also, I'll agree the OLO is being wise here in staying at arms-length from the media shitzkrieg and taking the higher road. The Reformatories are shooting themselves in the foot right now anyway, so why interfere in that?

Omar said...

Ok then, but when Harper slips out from under yet another sticky wicket, don't lay blame at my doorstep for wanting to be far more aggressive when it comes to dealing with him and his government. I think what has become painfully clear over the past few years is that our governance roles have been reversed. The Cons are misfits at governing and the Liberals do shite in opposition. If the Liberals had been in power these past few years and had all the crap hanging off them that has been shrouding the Conservatives, I don't doubt for a moment Harper would be capitalizing on the fact far better then the Liberals have managed to do so far. Just why is it we never see any significant movement for the Liberals in the polls? Crummy opposition tactics has to be a factor.

Steve V said...

Omar

Can it be ANYMORE aggressive on this story? You have some bad tunnel vision here. I havent' seen this much ink spilled since the squid convention. The Libs have issued with the Ethics Commissioner, they've called witnesses to committee, they're doing exactly what needs be done.

As for the polls, like I've said time and again, we don't attract voters yet, we rely on Harper repelling them. Opposition tactics are mostly irrelevant, it's about the brand.

Cath said...

Press should stay out of the bedroom

Omar said...

I don't think it is tunnel vision as much as it is cynicism. It blows my mind that Harper has been pulling the levers of power in this country since 2006 with all the gaffs, lies, blunders, wrong-headed policy reforms, etc, etc. Exactly when are the voters going to be repelled by these dimwits? I've had more than my fill.

Steve V said...

Omar

Just remember, it's not like the Cons enjoy widespread support, when you factor in non voters less than 1 in 5 pull a lever for these guys. They benefit from divided opposition, and ineffective alternatives. There is no- despite what the Conbots say- love affair with Harper. That said, Libs can't count on voter disgust to bring us back to power, because our brand isn't exactly seen as a call for "change".
