It's almost comical to compare the tough guy routine, we heard last March when Harper decided to go to court, with the "emergency motions" to delay we hear now. I thought Dion would have egg on his face, the Liberal Party shamed, why wouldn't Harper want to see this all play out before the Canadian people, isn't this just what he needs to get a majority?
A reminder of the rhetoric:
Stephen Harper QP:
"The truth is that this will prove to be in court the biggest mistake the leader of the Liberal Party has ever made."
----
"This whole thing will play out before the courts. The Leader of the Opposition and his party will want to retract their remarks."
----
"They are going to eventually want to retract these other allegations as well, but it is going to be too late."
----
"Today my representatives have filed a statement of claim in a court of law. I look forward to seeing the Leader of the Opposition actually let this go to trial so he can hear the whole truth and admit his own role in it."
----
"The Liberal Party will, as I said, come to regret engaging in this illegal and untruthful behaviour."
----
"They are all, in fact, contained in the documents filed in court today. We have yet to hear the view of the leader of the Liberal Party on all of this."
----
"We are all going to be very curious to find out how it was that the leader of the Liberal Party and his party came up with an incomplete and edited version of a conversation three years after an event. We are all looking forward to that explanation."
James Moore:
As the Prime Minister has said, when this issue goes to court all the facts will be on the table and the Liberal Party will be sorry for it.
----
When this comes to the light of day in law, the Liberals will be sorry for their false accusations.
Strange then, that the Liberals seem quite prepared to carry on with the court case, the Conservatives running scared. I mean, if this the biggest mistake EVER, why is our side eager to see this play out now?
Funny, like all bullies, when you hit back, they TURTLE.

Another great observation Steve, and one that will be strangley missed by the public, whether the media picks up or not.
Well Steve, the conservative scandals may have some competition. This morning CBC radio is reporting that one of the key players in the Adscam controversy, Jean Brault is now a police informant and that he is telling the cops that he actually gave the Liberal Party double the money he originally told Gomery. That means 2.3 million bucks of Liberal ill gotten gains.
Con scandals are unacceptable but so are Liberal ones. I will be voting for the NDP because I want I truly accountable government.
Oh Adscam.....hippo yawns.
Good post on Harper then and now!
As to adscam, it would not be an election if Harper, Layton and the RCMP did not plan some announcement on adscam. I predicted this when Harper first said he would call an election.
But leaks of Layton and Harper colluding for over a year to keep May out of the debates and Harper using the RCMP to keep reporters from asking questions of him, sort of puts a crack in hiding that alliance.
I see no reason to delay it. If we had to go to court, would it be delayed because of our jobs?
anon:
How many members of the Liberal "gov't" or support staff were ever convicted of anything relating to adscam? How many? Zero! Enough already. Another Harper gov't is all that you are going to get from voting for the Dips. Oh and if the Dips are so green, why are they advocating for lower gas prices? If the Dips are so much for the little guy and for equality, why were they so afraid of having a little ol lady with a bad hip in the debate? How do the Dips reconcile the fact that they want more money in the pockets for those at the "kitchen table", but then want to cancel corporate tax breaks and make big polluters pay. So you want more money in the pockets of the "little guy" but expect industry to pay more taxes and have to spend money on retrofiting their plants...hmmm something doesnt ad up here. I think Ill rename the NDP the Hypocrisy Party which will say whatever suits them at the time so we'll lend them our vote. Oh and trust me I know first hand from volunteering that the Dip candidates are not so lillly white, like tearing down other parties signs and putting their own up instead where they are not allowed. Pathetic. Oh and any party that says that they will do something about higher gas prices are lying. Its market driven. And any party that will lower gas taxes but claim to be "green" are also lying. Thank you.
Steve:
Unfortunately, the great leader Harper has played his cards right and all the bad stuff about his govt...Bernier, Cadman, In/out, deficits, recession, mulroney are all delayed till after the election. Moreover, the media is too focused on their "narratives" and the polls and how hard the Green Plan is to understand (really?) and Harper's sweater that they will give Harper a pass on all this stuff. This election is fascinating from the point of how the media and the spinners are creating their own realities. The media can basically create whatever spin they like and since the voters are too busy with their own lives or just not inclined to dig deeper will simply lap it up. Very frustrating.
oh and most of the bad stuff will come out and be dealt with right after the election, unless we have a prolonged recession, so most of it will be forgotten when we have the next election. wonderfull.
Dion has given us his vision his plan for the future. We get it. Now it time to release the hounds and start pounding away on the bad stuff, yes go negative, because there are lots of items to be negative about. Iggy, Rae, Trudeau, Findlay etc need to be front and center pounding away at their record. Copps as well she's the master at this type of stuff. Use her more. Plus, stop putting these weanies on the panels like Mckinnon et al, they sound and look weak. Pull Chretien out of retirement if you have too. Start the ground offensive. Let Dion do the fluffy stuff, but have almost a running mate like Iggy with him to do some carpet bombing. However, dont use Codere he's a goof. Plus, Kinsella made the point that the bloggers need to start being harder on the Lib strategy, as a way of letting the war room know that they need to start being more agressive. Give them some tough love.
However, the question is as I have stated earlier, where is the room to grow for the Libs? A few seats in the Maritimes, Que is a wasteland, a few pick-ups in Ont, the praries are a wasteland and a few pick-ups in the lower mainland. Hmmm.
Steve - Liberals may find adscam old news but a lot of the unaligned voters will at the least be reminded of liberal corruption and at most may soon hear about liberal party workers or MPs (or former MPs) being connected more directly to adscam. None of us know whether Brault has given information that might lead to more indictments.
My point remains the same, the only federal party without the taint of scandal is the NDP. That was my only point and it is accurate.
And, the only reason there is no taint of scandal, is because they NEVER govern.
Adscam= old, old, really old, so old news.
Who cares now...
And, I say this as someone who didn't vote Liberal last election.
lib
There is room to grow, but it all has to come together perfectly. I've said this from the beginning, but ignoring Quebec for the last two years is the biggest mistake we've made. Why we didn't update our language to reflect the change, re-invent Dion, is beyond me. The days of the Libs dominating Ontario are done, the right is no longer divided, which means Quebec will be the key to a return to power- it's that simple.
Adscam= old, old, really old, so old news.
Ingrained corruption in a political party is never old news.
I say this as someone who voted Liberal in '93 and 1 election afterwards. You may recall that the '93 vote was against the Mulroney government, more than for Chretien. I never voted PC again. Makes me wonder why the LPC doesn't want to properly rebuild the party.
mobius:
Most of the old blood is gone. The Libs have a new team...Findlay, Kennedy, Trudeau et al and Dion was no where near this scandal. However, I agree that most of the leftovers from the Chretien era need to hit the road. Although, I do miss Chretien.
Most of the old blood is gone.
I beg to differ. Guys like Coderre are still around. Martin is still drawing a cheque.
I give Dion a bit of a break, because I think he was clueless in this, and I respect his anti-Separatist writings. Chretien laughed in our faces with his golf ball humour. So what if a few million went missing....
Chretien was a master politician, and he convinced me to vote for him twice. To see him still deified by the LPC, after what went on under his watch, is really disturbing.
mobius
Good grief man. You know what, anybody that still attempts to interject adscam into the NOW isn't worth the bother. I gigantic WHATEVER too you, and please with the "I used to vote Liberal" crap. Who cares, such tripe.
Chretien and Martin brought the deficit down, was in power during unprecedented growth, brought in numerous progressive policies, slayed the seperatist dragon with Dion's help, kept us out of Iraq. Yes adscam blah blah blah, a couple of goofs with loose ties to the Libs got their hand caught in the cookie jar, get over it.
"get over it."
Get over it was like year's ago, now it's just like go away.
