Would you let a party that can't even manage it's own time manage the country? Almost farcical. The Liberal convention now looks downright SUBSTANTIVE compared to this nothingness. Not only the name change, but by all accounts virtually no debate on anything.
Sewered again Jack:

According to sources the NDP have acquired the Voter Action Network software that the Liberals had to pay big bucks for. It's not fair.
Bob
Layton's speech was pathetic. Like listening to David Lewis in 1972.
Well, Layton got what he wanted - attention.
I don't know if you saw the policy but the NDP divided the first section of the policy debate from 1 resolution into around 10. So that put the name change around 15th in the order to be debated. Sorry they the delegates at the debated didn't feel Steve V and his blog's opinion should have been considered when they voted on this dividing. Although it does show how uneducated you are on Robert's rules and a democratic system.
If the party wanted it to be debated, it would have been.
Well, Layton got what he wanted - attention.
Unlike Iggy, who just wants to be left alone, apparently.
As for the non-debate, thems the breaks. The party put the items in priority order and the name change just wasn't a high enough priority.
Apparently it has to be a rainy day in order for Iggy to "think thoughts".
LeBlanc would have been a much better pick.
Hello - were we not discussing the NDP and Layton and name change?
Anon Iggy trashers spend ALL day on every blogsite with stupid, useless comments.
Thinking in the rain is just as good as thinking in your office, or while cutting the grass - it's good to think. Try it.
So what items were in priority, Greg?
Oh yeah, the NDP is a leader-centric party. Just like most political parties. No carbon tax, just to spite Dion in the last election.
So what is the theme for the next election? I know. Michael Ignatieff, Just Visiting Canada.
One more thing. We all know that the NDP loves Darrell Dexter. And Halifax too.
The NDP have anti-Iggy/Liberal attack ads ready to go, should be fun.
Hey Iggy haters!
Seems the fella does have some friends in NS:

All the best!
The anonymous NDP supporters on this thread can rationalize it all they want but the idea of the NDP changing their name received alot of play, which might have penetrated the summer stupor of Canadians.
Now that name change has been shunted aside, not because they voted against it but because they ran out of time at the convention and could not vote on it.
You folks may say it was not a priority but the play it received would give the impression it was one of top ones. So, the fact you did not even get to vote on it would appear that you could not even organize a convention to vote on one of the top priority issues facing that convention.
Thankfully, for you Dippers, Canadians are probably not paying enough attention for it to really matter. After all, it is summer and the NDP is the fourth party.
As an aside, what it is with political parties in this country and name changes? The Reform Party seriously considered changing their name to CCRAP and now the NDP could not even get the idea on the convention floor, despite holding a rather spirited debate in the public media.
Rationalize is right. It was your own people that were pushing the name change, MP's, party officials, all the hype.
Hey, why is Layton wearing Tory blue?
Almost no one of any significance was "pushing" the name change. It was a resolution put forward by a couple of riding associations (I realize that this concept is totally alien to Liberals since Liberals never discuss policy at all at their conventions). The media beat it up into an issue and I'm glad because it gave the NDP about 10 times as much publicity as would normally be given to a mid-summer convention where nothing was really at stake. Now the media is crying crocodile tears about the NDP not having a vote on the name change when the media were the only people pushing the issue in the first place. The jokes on them!
O/T, when the Reform Party was going through its name change exercise I would have really liked it if they would have changed it to the Canadian Conservative Liberal Alliance Party.
I think if during the subsequent election, Stockwell Day would have gone about the country stating to Canadian "Show Canada you really live it, give it the CCLAP", he would have swept the country.
You keep telling yourself that DL. Whatever gets you throught the night.
D'oh!!
That should be "Show Canada you really LOVE it....
"I realize that this concept is totally alien to Liberals since Liberals never discuss policy at all at their conventions"
The timing of that crack is remarkable really.
I think the NDP used the name change to get some media coverage and attention that they otherwise wouldn't get - boy did that bomb.
Nothing has changed - so this whole trying to copy Obama thing is a joke.
It's the 1930's continuing in the NDP party.
