Ignatieff On Arctic Sovereignty

Thought this was timely, from a recent "not in Ottawa" townhall:

sI like Ignatieff's emphasis on stewardship over sovereignty, and diplomacy over conflict, but wonder if it will be possible to develop the energy resources in the Arctic without damaging the environment. There would have to be strict environmental regulations for tankers using Canadian ports and all the pipelines that will be necessary. The effects of any oil spills will last a very long time and clean up is very slow, as we are still learning from the aftermath of the Exxon Valdez spill.

I think this stewardship idea is an end around approach to sovereignty. If we establish our role, within this gray area of jurisdiction, then we take control without butting heads. I think it's crafty.
