A Brief Interlude

A journalist wakes from the collective slumber.

What do those two stiffs know? And the sad part, there's more of them, some even control our financial markets. How frightening is that? People have no idea, our best minds, duped.

Wait...I read that article as being supportive of the Green Shift.

Are you saying it's a negative article? Cause it didn't read that way to me.

Just checking in case I am misunderstanding something. I want Dion to win. This article looked helpful to me, in terms of helping the Liberals.

Hard to believe isn't it, and it uses that dirty word "expert" opinion.

Was it that dry? Whoosh.

I read a comment that stated that perhaps voters have reached a comfort level with Harper. It's somewhat standard that a govt gets at least two terms, maybe this is what we are facing?

I think this election is proving that Canadians are still not convinced that we are facing an environmental and energy crisis. If Canadians believe that we are facing an environmental/energy crisis, then they do not believe it will not occur within their lifetime, so who cares. I also do not believe that Canadians believe we are headed for a recession and that running a deficit is a bad thing. Canadians only care when govt decisions directly impact their day to day lives. We want tax cuts, we want hand outs, we want lower gas prices. We dont think long term. When the clock strikes 11:59, then maybe we will doing something about it, but ill be 70 then, so what does it matter?

I think Harper has taped into our immediate needs. I am going to lower your taxes and try and stay out of your way. Walk outside, do you see anything wrong? I dont, go about your business and dont worry. The polar bears are way up north, so it really doesnt affect you does it. They'll be fine. Go about your business and look you have a couple of extra bucks in your pocket. Go get yourself a double double, you deserve it and dont fret. People dont want to hear about carbon taxes. We're recycling dammit, isnt that enough? Only when there are immediate consequences will citizens react. Its human nature.

I listened to John Godfrey speak a week ago about this being our Churchilian moment. A call to arms for the environment. However, the threat of the the Nazi's was real and it was immediate. Climate change is still too abstract and still very minimal on our day to day lives.

I dont know how you break through this mindset and I do not think Dion has really figured it out as well. Perhaps, a comfort level has been reached with Harper? Only another term in office will shake this faith?

I've read bits and pieces - apparently the cap and trade is not working out all that well in Europe, Denmark is doing well using the carbon tax method.

Also, Tom Friedman, 3 time Pulitzer Prize winner who wrote the Flat Earth series was on interviews last week to promote his new book "Hot Flat and Crowded". In the interviews he said (he was referring to the US plans) that Obama and McCain have plans - Obama's is better, but neither will get the job done. He's promoting carbon tax.

I'm sure you are aware of this writer:

Thomas L. Friedman, a world-renowned author and journalist, joined The New York Times in 1981 as a financial reporter specializing in OPEC- and oil-related news and later served as the chief diplomatic, chief White House, and international economics correspondents. A three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, he has traveled hundreds of thousands of miles reporting the Middle East conflict, the end of the cold war, U.S. domestic politics and foreign policy, international economics, and the worldwide impact of the terrorist threat. His foreign affairs column, which appears twice a week in the Times, is syndicated to one hundred other newspapers worldwide.

Friedman is the author of From Beirut to Jerusalem (FSG, 1989), which won both the National Book Award and the Overseas Press Club Award in 1989 and was on the New York Times bestseller list for nearly twelve months.

...what have we got here - the likes of Mike Duffy who are doing Canadians no favour in their very sketchy knowledge of it all.

Bingo!

This is exactly how Canadians think, and the LPC hasn't quite caught on yet. Did you see the cultural freak-out at the most recent overnight gas price increases? I was in the US, and filled my tank before crossing the border.
