Embarrassing

Partisanship aside, is it too much to ask to be able to listen to the Finance Minister deliver the budget?? The only network to carry the speech is the CBC (plus the underline "Liberals and NDP don't support budget", while CTV is off on the "breaking news" angle, as well as Global. Why can't we carry the budget, then speculate? What is happening makes the actual budget a sideshow, I can't even digest what is offered through all the noise. This coverage is embarrassing.

I realize we live in nano-second world, but is it possible for the Liberals, NDP and Bloc to wait with there verdict until Canadians know what they are rejecting. What is the hurry, can't we listen and then the REJECTION might make some sense? I'm not even sure what we are rejecting, because I HAVEN'T HEARD THE BUDGET. Cool your jets everyone!

Maybe next time, the government can just do a press release with the budget details and forget anything formal in the House of Commons. Apparently Flaherty's speech is irrelevant, minds are decided, the election looms. Every player, the media, should be ashamed at all this hyper-politicism of an important announcement. Let Flaherty make his speech, allow us to process for a second, then on with the show. Geez.

True. Even the Americans allow Bush his State of the Union, uninterrupted, why can't our networks let the little weasel speak. As an aside, CTV was going crazy with the "election next week", before they bothered to get the official Bloc position. Nice journalism.

Actually the Bloc Quebecois has said they will support the budget, so looks like no election for now. But I agree, lets hear the budget for before passing any judgement on it.

Although not a great budget, I am somewhat relieved we are not having an election now as I think we would do better later than now. Considering this seemed to be very appealing to the Middle class and suburban vote, probably best to wait so we can develop a platform that appeals to this group since the suburbs are the fastest growing areas and those two groups essentially determine who wins.

Yes it was only on CPAC from start to beginning. I was disgusted as well. I really don't need to hear from the talking heads until after I hear the budget for myself thank you. Besides Flaherty is actually an entertaining performer.

I watched most of it on CPAC, but unlike you Eugene, I cannot stand Flaherty. He's smug and nasty frankly, so I flipped around and watched some of the talking heads. I find them entertaining as they swim around in their perceived self importance.

Overall, I know what you're both saying though. It was obnoxious.

The best line that I saw, Llyod Robertson asking Stephane Dion how on earth he would square not supporting the budget, given that Duceppe had. Dion laughed out loud and said "what a criterion on which to base my decision, follow what the Separtist party is doing?!" I think Lloyd blushed.

That's a great line by Dion.

Obviously CBC thinks we'll nap off if there isn't somone breaking in every few minutes to pre-chew our news for us. And those chewers have in turn already spent all day prior to the budget speech receiving their pre-chewed news from party flacks in lock-down.
Bad form, I agree.

This only falls into line with the networks overall attitude that nothing is "news worthy" till they say it is.

Did this ever happen to a Liberal budget?

Oh well, I guess PMSH will have to review it one announcement at a time, and take the 'photo-op' abuse from the MSM.

"I guess PMSH will have to review it one announcement at a time"

Don't worry he will, and it has nothing to do with the media. Everyone covered the 1.5 billion environment announcement, but Harper still made sure to keep announcing it, day after day, province after province. Harper received more mileage from that one announcement than any hybrid could offer.

Sounds just like the complaint against figure skating commentary, talking over the music. CTV had since toned it down [last I heard], after it reached a peak of constant chatter while the skaters were performing.

Lloyd Robertson certainly did ask a silly question of Mr. Dion and was made a fool of for it.

Great line by Mr. Dion. Too bad it will never see the light of day again.

Part of the media frenzy may have been orchestrated by the Harper government to subtract from Defence Minister O'Connor's abject apology in the House for supplying Canadians with false information.
A lot of the hooplah surrounding the budget may have been manufactured to take away from the import of O'Connor's admission, and hence to the fate of the four detainees that have gone "missing" under O'Connor's watch but which he still insists will be found.
It's all about smoke and mirrors with this new government. It's all about deny, delay and do something else to take Canadian minds off where the puck is Canada!
O'Connor's admission in the HoC today needs to be followed, and the new government's circus today can't be allowed to sideline Canada's most important issue: our mission in Afghanistan and our people on the line and at risk in a very mismanaged intelligence scenario. Budget, smudget: what's up with our troops?!
