Fishy

Have you seen the television ads from the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association? The ads go to great pains to paint Stephen Harper as Mr. GREEN, in a way that smells partisan. You be the judge if this smells fishy:

Phil von Finckenstein:

He’s a public relations consultant who in addition to working with the CFRA also works with the Fraser Institute; a well known rightwing astroturf organization. He was also Conservative MP Stockwell Day’s Director of Communications during the Alliance phase of the party.

Mr. von Finckenstein was formerly Director of Communications for the Leader of the Opposition and the Canadian Alliance. He also served as the Senior Media Officer for Preston Manning, MP, and distinguished himself in senior positions in two federal election campaigns.

Kory Teneycke:
Conservative blogger Stephen Taylor admits that the Executive Director of the CFRA, Kory Teneycke is a friend of his..

The CRFA is a non-profit organization, that receives funding from other companies and organizations, including Shell Canada and Sunoco. A full membership in the organization costs 75 thousand. It is natural to assume the funding for the television ads comes from the membership contributions.

The Conservative Accountability Act:
a ban on contributions from corporations, unions and organizations to parties and candidates- Corporations, trade unions, associations and groups may not make political contributions.

Impose a complete ban on contributions by corporations, unions, and organizations

These ads are political propaganda in my view, the message of clean fuels is the front to make Harper look like the environmental champion. When you consider who operates within the CRFA, can it be construed that corporations are making donations to a political party, via a third-party, which itself is making the donation. In other words, have the Conservatives found a clever way to circumvent their own legislation, which is supposed to eliminate contributions from organizations and corporations. If you watch the ads, the odor is suspicious to say the least. Are these ads fair ball? Is the CRFA laundering political contributions?

Teneyke is more than "a friend" to blogging tories, he's a former staffer to Preston Manning and long time unelected poobah of the youth wing of the "United Alternative", or whatever it was called back then.

Not to mention former and future Conservative candidate Peter Kent's appearance in the ad.

But most of all, they're the association that bought off Pierre Bourque in the last campaign, reserving banner space for the duration of the election.

I forgot to mention Mr. Kent, the ad isn't subtle.

Funny Bourque doesn't have a BIG headline on this piece of news.

I presume they've covered themselves on these ads, but likely by the skin of their teeth.

They make my skin crawl frankly, because it's not just about "greening up" the con's. It's suggesting that Mr. Harper is personally doing this for Canadians, not the Government of Canada, which would be bad enough.

That part of it seems out line to me. "Have you heard what PM Harper is doing...."

I don't know what the rules for this stuff are, but this ad has always made me uncomforatble.

I thought there were limits on third-party partisan advertizing.

That is what Stephen Harper, President of the NCC, fought against for much of the 90s.

I wonder if anybody has thought about bringing this up with the head of Elections Canada.

Oh, that's right, there is no head of Elections Canada anymore. How convenient.
